LOS ANGELES -- Toyota Motor Sales is recalling 6,000 new Lexus RX350 and RX450h crossovers from the 2016 model year to fix issues related to airbags.
The automaker, in a statement today, said the affected vehicles have a driver’s knee airbag that “may not have been properly manufactured.” The defect could increase the risk of injury in a crash, though no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of this issue, Toyota said.
Owners of the RX models -- which were redesigned for 2016 -- will be notified by mail and dealers will inspect and replace the airbag assembly if warranted. Toyota did not have a specific number for how many of the affected RX models had been delivered to customers.
The issue is not related to the ongoing Takata airbag crisis that has affected approximately 24 million vehicles in the U.S. and which has been linked to 11 deaths. The airbags in the Lexus RX models were supplied by Gosei, the Japanese supplier in which Toyota owns a 43 percent stake.
