Bargaining at the subcommittee level continues at a near constant pace while the union has held main table discussions with each company since the strike began. It met with Ford on Saturday, GM on Sunday and Stellantis today. In a statement, Stellantis said “the discussion was constructive and focused on where we can find common ground to reach an agreement that provides a bridge to the future by enabling the Company to meet the challenges of electrification.†It said the two sides “have the opportunity to establish a framework in this contract that will allow the company to be competitive during this historic transformation and bring our workforce along on this journey. This includes identifying a solution for Belvidere, something we have been committed to from the beginning and a discussion we want to continue with the UAW."
It was unclear when the companies plan to present counteroffers. Each offer on the table includes 20 percent wage gains and reduces the time it takes to make top wages in half. Meanwhile, Ford continues to face the threat of dual strikes in the U.S. and Canada as it has yet to reach a tentative agreement with Unifor before a 11:59 p.m. Monday deadline. A strike there could affect 5,600 workers at one assembly plant and two engine plants and quickly have a ripple effect on U.S. operations. The two engine plants built V-8s that power Ford’s lucrative Super Duty line of pickups, F-150 and Mustang.

UAW chief uninterested in White House intervention as strike enters fourth day
Mon, Sep 18, 1:28 pm

As the UAW’s strike against the Detroit 3 enters its fourth day, union leadership appears uninterested in any intervention by the Biden Administration.
President Joe Biden has said he’d dispatch acting labor secretary Julie Su and White House senior adviser Gene Sperling to Detroit to help the UAW and Detroit 3 broker a deal. UAW President Shawn Fain was asked Monday on MSNBC if the duo would be key in ending the strike and reaching agreements with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
“Not at all,†Fain said. “This is our battle. Our negotiating teams are working hard. Our members are out there manning picket lines and our allies are out there with us. This battle is not about the president, the former president or any other person prior to that.â€
Over the weekend, former President Barack Obama said in a statement it was “time to do right†by the workers, and The Detroit News reported former President Donald Trump was considering a trip to the picket lines.
Fain had a similarly chilly tone about White House help in a Friday press conference.
“We’re just going to keep on bargaining,†he said. “I’m not concerned with what the president does or who he assigns here.â€
When pressed on if he sees the White House as an ally, Fain said he didn’t want to make the negotiations about politics and wanted to focus on the members. He declined to say if he would even let Su and Sperling into UAW headquarters if they came to Detroit, saying union leadership “hasn’t had that discussion.â€
Biden, earlier Friday, urged the automakers to “go further†with their contract offers to reward workers, echoing Fain’s slogan that “record corporate profits mean record contracts.â€

Mon, Sep 18, 1:25 pm

The UAW's first simultaneous strike against all of the Detroit 3 is certainly historic, but here in the town where Jeep was born and helped win a World War — where 5,800 workers walked off their jobs at midnight Friday — it is doubly so.

Fri, Sep 15, 9:58 pm

Hundreds of union supporters gathered Friday afternoon blocks from the Huntington Convention Center, home to the 2023 Detroit auto show, for a rally expected to feature Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Most attendees wore red and carried signs supporting the union.
Among those in the crowd was former UAW President Bob King, shaking hands and posing for photos. He told Automotive News he was “very excited†about the fight the union is mounting.
“What Shawn has done is he’s listened to the membership and he’s putting their anger and frustration forward and that’s really important,†he said, referring to UAW President Shawn Fain.
King said he had no concern about negotiating and striking all three automakers at once.
“It’s a brilliant strategy,†King said. “It keeps the companies pitted against each other.â€
He reiterated Fain’s stance that the Detroit 3 could afford the union’s demands.
“I was part of the workers making tremendous sacrifices,†King said. “We did that to save the companies. We didn’t do it to create four or five wage tiers. That’s just wrong. In my view, the companies’ [offers] have only come up a tiny bit of what they need to do out of equity and fairness for the workers.â€

GM CEO Mary Barra: Strike 'will not be good for the economy overall'
Fri, Sep 15, 11:48 am

"The key in any of this is to get to the table and talk through the issues, and that's what we've been working to do," Generlal Motors CEO Mary Barra said Friday morning on CNBC.
Barra said a strike will impact not only the assembly plant being targeted, but other GM facilities and jobs outside of GM that depend on the automaker's production.
The union is striking a GM plant in Missouri that builds two redesigned midsize pickup trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon, as well as vans.
Barra referenced the automaker's latest offer, which included a 20 percent wage increase and additional paid time off, as "very generous" and said she thinks the strike can be resolved quickly.
"We're at the table. We're problem-solving. We want to get this done," she said. A strike "will not be good for the economy overall."

Ford CEO says UAW proposal could force bankruptcy
Thu, Sep 14, 9:03 pm

Ford CEO Jim Farley said Thursday the UAW proposal to hike wages by 40 percent, cut work weeks and add new pension benefits could bankrupt the company.
"You want us to choose bankruptcy over supporting our workers," Farley, in a CNBC interview, said of the UAW proposal. He said there are no current talks, and the automaker has received no counteroffer. "Nothing is going on."
Farley said if the UAW proposal had been in effect since 2019, instead of making about $30 billion in profits over four years, the company would have lost about $15 billion "and gone bankrupt by now."

UAW's strike strategy exploits leeway created by expired contract
Thu, Sep 14, 7:48 pm

The UAW's plan to strike only a handful of plants to pressure the Detroit 3 into better contracts would, under most circumstances, be illegal. Biden wants UAW, automakers to work around-the-clock to avert strike
Wed, Sep 13, 6:35 pm

U.S. President Joe Biden wants the UAW and the Detroit 3 automakers to work around-the-clock to avoid a strike, White House economic adviser Jared Bernstein said Wednesday.
Biden has “encouraged the parties to stay at the table and to work 24 and 7 to get a win-win agreement that keeps UAW workers at the heart of our auto future," Bernstein said.
Asked whether Biden will bring in negotiators or be more actively involved, Bernstein said “the president’s been very much engaged.â€
Biden has met the UAW president in the Oval Office, called him on Labor Day, and called executives from all three automakers before he left for the G20 last week to “encourage them to provide more forward leaning offers to stay at the table.â€
Main table negotiations shift location
Wed, Sep 13, 4:39 pm

One of the challenges of UAW President Shawn Fain’s unique strategy of bargaining with all three automakers concurrently is simple logistics: it’s difficult for the union president to be in three places at once if main table negotiations heat up in the final hours before the deadline.
Up until now, those negotiations have been taking place at company facilities in Dearborn, Auburn Hills and Warren, according to people familiar with the process. But with less than two days to go before the expiration of the current deals, the talks have shifted to the union’s Solidarity House headquarters in Detroit, according to two sources.
That means Fain doesn’t have to waste time traveling between the three companies if he’s needed at the table.
Bargaining continues at a rapid pace, with proposals being passed back and forth between the union and automakers. It’s unclear how much movement there’s been on wage gains, although all three companies are believed to have offered numbers higher than their initial proposals, which were made public last week.
Fain is expected to discuss the latest offers, and the union’s strike strategy should talks break down, later this afternoon at 5 p.m. on Facebook Live.

Williams also said subcommittees have reached tentative agreements in "a number of important areas," including health and safety.
General Motors also sent a counteroffer to the union over the weekend.
“We are ready to negotiate in Detroit 24/7, just as we have been for the past seven weeks since we gave them our Members Demands," UAW President Shawn Fain said Monday. "Despite receiving no response for over a month, when the CEOs are ready to make a serious offer we'll be there, day or night. It’s unfortunate the companies have waited until the last moments to get focused on the needs of 150,000 autoworkers, our families, and our communities.â€
