We know almost everything about the base 2020 Chevrolet Corvette with a midengine layout. We know about the power (490 hp, 495 hp with Z51), price (under $60,000) and interior details (lots of buttons) but we've only seen a quick flash of the convertible in a sizzle reel during the reveal in California.
It looks like the midengine Corvette gets a McLaren-style retractable hard top with two flying buttresses behind the driver, based on a prototype spotted in metro Detroit this month. We're assuming it will have the same LT2 powertrain and dual-clutch transmission. We don't know the curb weight of the base model -- though 3,500 pounds is a good guess -- but we'll assume the drop top will be heavier by a few notches.
I don't see the need for a convertible and a targa top, though I've been informed that some people want a wide angle view of the sky. That's fine, it takes all kinds.
Chevrolet is also previewing a racing version of the midengine Corvette, and teasing an announcement and more details to come in the fall.
We'll find out more about the new Corvette convertible this fall.
