Lamborghini's crossover moment arrives

Lamborghini will churn out variants to sustain interest in its two main nameplates, while the addition of a utility vehicle will introduce a new look to the brand's profile.Huracan: Lamborghini's "entry-level" sports car will see myriad variants in coming years to keep sales and interest fresh. The most recent addition was the Performante, with 640 hp, a lighter curb weight and active aerodynamics. Next up could be a GT3, a Speedster or Barchetta, an SV and a Superleggera. A redesign isn't likely until 2021 or 2022. At that point, the car likely will drop its V-10 engine in favor of a turbocharged V-8; electrification is likely on at least some variants. The most recent model is the Aventador S Roadster shown at the Frankfurt auto show this month, offering 740 hp, rear-wheel steering and a top speed of around 216 mph. Subsequent models are expected in both roadster and coupe guise, the next one likely incorporating active aerodynamics as the Huracan Performante did. A redesign isn't expected until 2020 at the earliest. It will continue to use a naturally aspirated V-12 engine, though with the likely addition of electric motors at the front wheels to boost horsepower as high as 1,000.
