GM Tech Center valet who pulled gun to stop stabbing suspended pending investigation

The parking valet who stopped a stabbing at General Motors’ Technical Center in Warren, Mich., on Wednesday by pulling out his concealed weapon remains employed but is reportedly suspended while an investigation takes place.Didarul Sarder was credited by Warren Mayor Jim Fouts with putting an end to the stabbing of a 52-year-old employee by her 32-year-old daughter. Sarder pulled out a handgun and pointed it toward the assailant, stopping the attack before police arrived.According to the Detroit Free Press, Sarder was then placed under suspension pending the investigation.The Free Press reported that Warren police understand Sarder will remain employed with his employer, Chicago-based contractor SP Plus, but will no longer work at GM. An SP Plus spokeswoman told the Free Press it has not been determined if Sarder will be back at GM.Local media reported Wednesday that Sarder, who has a concealed-weapons permit and is employed by a contractor, was escorted off GM property and fired for having a firearm.GM spokesman Michael Albano said GM never asked for Sarder to be fired and said, to the company’s knowledge, Sarder remains employed with the valet service.“We’re still trying to work out all the details as to why he believed he was fired,” Albano said.Neither Sarder nor SP Plus could be reached for comment on Thursday. A message left for Fouts was not immediately returned. Questions for the Warren Police Department were directed to Fouts’ office.Sarder told The Detroit News he ran outside after being alerted of the altercation and pulled out his handgun, telling the suspect to drop her knife. After she did, Sarder called 911, and police arrived soon after.The suspect is alleged to have stabbed the GM employee several times in the neck, abdomen and back.The attack occurred after the suspect walked into the lobby of the Vehicle Engineering Center and asked for the employee by name. The two women, whose identities have not been revealed, talked and stepped outside before the employee was stabbed.Sarder told the News that Wednesday marked the first time he pulled out his handgun.“I’m winding down,” he told the News. “It took a while to soak in.”According to The News, Sarder denied local reports that he was fired, saying he was told by someone at GM to leave the premises after police arrived. Fouts called Sarder a “hero” in a Facebook post.“His quick action … undoubtedly saved this woman’s life,” he wrote. “Had he not legally exercised his second amendment rights this woman would probably not be with us today.”
