Number to watch: $32.5 billion

Value of American auto parts shipments to Mexico in 2018 — an increase of $2.5 billion over 2017, according to Commerce Department data. The Trump administration's threat this month to impose tariffs on all imports from Mexico over immigration issues would have penalized the flow of nearly $60 billion of Mexican-made vehicle parts to U.S. customers. That tariff plan was rescinded June 7. Less clear was what effect the tariffs might have had on orders for U.S. parts needed to produce vehicles at Mexico's auto plants.
