The 2023 NADA Show wrapped up and dealers came away with plenty of news from their brands at make meetings and top-level views of the auto retail market heading into the year. 

Nissan warned its dealers that Ariya EV supplies will be tight in 2023 and Ford dropped its EV sales cap for dealers on the less expensive tier of its electric vehicle certification program. 

Meanwhile dealers are looking at a very different economic environment this year.

Ahead of the show the Automotive News Retail Forum: NADA also covered EV tax credits, FTC regulations and diversity.

Nissan warns dealers Ariya supplies will be tight in 2023

Nissan Motor Co., citing high battery material costs, warned dealers on Sunday that U.S. supplies of the Ariya crossover, a flagship electric vehicle, will be limited this year.

The Japanese automaker, during a make meeting at NADA, also announced plans for a wave of new EV and gasoline models it hopes will boost U.S. market share to more than 6 percent in fiscal 2023 from 5 percent last year. Nissan expects a 19 percent increase in production in 2023 vs. 2022.

Hyundai dealers celebrate market share gains in the U.S.

Hyundai and its dealers celebrated major market share gains in 2022 and discussed the company's next big moves at the NADA make meeting on Sunday.

The brand ended the year with 5.2 percent market share, up from 4.9 percent at the end of last year, according to data from Motor Intelligence.

Kevin Reilly, chairman of the Hyundai National Dealer Council and owner of Alexandria Hyundai in Alexandria, Va., said its success is due in part to the Hyundai's investment in its product lineup.

With Tesla Inc. now the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S., Mercedes-Benz and its dealers must better educate customers on the benefits of electric vehicles as it plans to cut into Tesla's lead and go all-EV by 2030, according to the brand's dealer board chairman.

Joseph Agresta Jr., who took over as head of the dealer board Jan. 1, said he blames a lack of customer education for slow EV adoption rates in certain parts of the country.

Acura dealers will have to work harder to stop defections

The shortage of vehicles on Acura lots over the past year is causing shoppers to look elsewhere, said Glenn Davis, chairman of the Acura National Dealer Advisory Board. Davis, who owns Davis Honda in Burlington, N.J., and Davis Acura in Langhorne, Pa.

That means that Acura dealers need to work harder to reestablish brand loyalty now that recovering inventory presents luxury buyers more choices on what to buy.

Hall: Dealers ‘want Scout vehicles to be in our VW showrooms

Volkswagen dealers would have had a really good 2022 if not for a couple of things, the new chairman of the Volkswagen National Dealer Advisory Council said.

First, the production shortage held sales back. Second, they were hit with a surprise announcement in May that Scout Motors will be revived as an EV brand, with products that VW retailers think should be in their showrooms.

Randy Dye expects Stellantis to be a force to be reckoned with in the electric vehicle space.

Dye admits that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was behind the curve on EVs but says the merger with PSA Group to form Stellantis in 2021 changed that.

Stellantis plans to launch more than 25 battery EVs in the U.S. by 2030. An electric Ram ProMaster van is slated for a 2023 arrival, and more debuts are scheduled for 2024, including the Ram 1500, the Wrangler-inspired Jeep Recon and the midsize Jeep Wagoneer S.

Cadillac dealers are preparing for EV rollout

General Motors has done a great job advising its brands' dealerships, including Cadillac stores, on how to prepare for the rollout of more electric vehicles as the brand's lineup transitions away from internal combustion, said Inder Dosanjh, chairman of the Cadillac National Dealer Council.

"They're much further ahead than other manufacturers as far as installing the chargers, the training," said Dosanjh, CEO of Dosanjh Family Auto Group in the San Francisco Bay Area.

NADA watching out for negative equity problems in 2023

Used-vehicle wholesale prices will continue to fall through 2023 as the coronavirus pandemic fades, NADA's top economist said, but negative equity could become a new point of concern.

“I've heard some anecdotal stories, and I am sure many of the dealers out here have [their] own anecdotal stories as well about people coming in very underwater,� NADA Chief Economist Patrick Manzi said at a press conference Saturday. “This is going to be one of the things that I am paying close attention to.�

Ford drops EV sales cap, lowers training costs for some dealers

Ford is eliminating the annual sales cap of 25 electric vehicles for dealerships on the less-expensive tier of the brand's EV certification program and reducing the amount those stores must spend training employees by $10,000.

The changes are a bid to win over retailers who took issue with some of the certification program's costs and requirements. Although enrollment for the program closed last month, Ford says it will allow dealers on a case-by-case basis to change their tier, join or drop out based on the newly announced changes.

Genesis dealers ask for more flexibility on facility upgrades

Genesis will consider granting some flexibility on its expensive Keystone facilities plan to dealers who were hesitant to construct exclusive storefronts for the young luxury brand.

Of Genesis' 270-dealership network, only two standalone stores opened in 2022 -- one in Lafayette, La., and the other in Greer, S.C. There are 75 more in some phase of development.

At the brand's make meeting Saturday, Genesis Motor North America CEO Jose Muñoz told dealers that investing in the standalone facilities would help boost the customer experience and, in turn, sales.

With the Super Bowl just two weeks away, Kia stands alone as the only automaker that has committed to running a commercial at this point.

The Korean brand, which has been a Super Bowl staple, will highlight the popular three-row Telluride. The utility vehicle has been freshened for the 2023 model year.

It is pushing the Telluride during the game because the company "increased production in the [West Point, Ga.] plant, starting in September, by 20 percent, so we need to make sure we keep telling people to keep the demand," said Russell Wager, Kia America's vice president of marketing.

Volvo dealers expressed a list of concerns at their make meeting, but almost all of them stemmed from a single concern -- Anders Gustafsson is stepping down as CEO of Volvo Car USA.

Volvo dealers have enjoyed a heyday with higher profits, better sales per store, good product mixes and good communications with the global decision-makers in Gothenberg, Sweden, said Ernie Norcross, chairman of the Volvo Retail Advisory Board. "And dealers are concerned about the change in continuity," he said. "Anders has helped us. We're on a profit run. We want to make sure things continue."

Cadillac to bring dealers onto digital retailing platform starting in Q2

Cadillac will bring its U.S. dealers onto General Motors' digital retailing platform beginning in the second quarter and will not limit it to electric vehicles as initially planned, GM executives said.

The online sales tool, powered by automotive technology provider Tekion, launched with the electric Chevy Bolt and initially was discussed as a way to drive EV sales. But executives told Automotive News that thinking has evolved, and Cadillac's full portfolio, including gasoline models, will be offered on the digital platform at the same time.

Not long after the NADA Show floor officially opened early on Friday, Cox Automotive President Steve Rowley walked around the massive vendor space, talking and listening to dealers and others as crowds milled about.

He noticed both enthusiasm and anxiety.

The enthusiasm came from the usual dealer eagerness to grow and build the business. Anxiety, more focused and intense than in the past, stemmed from economic concerns.

General Motors expects to return to nearly full production this year and has taken action to minimize the logistical bottlenecks that have hampered shipments to dealerships, officials from Chevrolet and its dealer council said Saturday. GM is working to reduce ongoing supply chain constraints and avoid having unfinished vehicles awaiting parts, Scott Bell, vice president of global Chevrolet, told Automotive News ahead of the make meeting for Chevy and Buick-GMC dealers.

Subaru projects 2023 sales increase, shows dealers next Outback

Subaru executives told dealers Saturday that they can expect at least some relief from crazy tight inventory levels in the coming year as production levels increase. And they said the brand should see higher year-over-year sales as a result.

Tom Doll, CEO of Subaru of America, told Automotive News after the brand's make meeting that Subaru is forecasting a roughly 8 percent gain to 600,000 sales in 2023 as production constraints ease. Subaru sold 556,581 vehicles in the U.S. in 2022 and last topped 600,000 in 2020.

BMW dealers have an expanding portfolio of electric vehicles to look forward to in 2023 and should see significant volume increases as a result.

Shaun Bugbee, BMW of North America's executive vice president of operations, noted the arrival of the i4 sporty four-door, the iX midsize crossover and i7 large sedan in 2022.

Another i4 variant, the i4 eDrive35, and the i5, an electric version of the 5 Series midsize sedan, are set to launch in 2023.

Volkswagen dealers heard plans from the brand's new leadership team to further localize engineering and development in North America in the near future, as well as plans to change the way its vehicles are pitched to the public, according to dealers who attended the brand's make meeting Saturday.

"We got to hear Pablo's plans about bringing a lot of investment, design and engineering to Chattanooga, away from other parts of the world, which could be groundbreaking, even life-changing for the brand," said Charlie Hall, new chairman of the Volkswagen National Dealer Advisory Council, referring to VW of America CEO Pablo Di Si. "We might be able to finally break out of this boutique brand image that we've lived with in the U.S. for so long."

Infiniti dealers who have been clamoring for fresh products soon will have a chance to "touch and feel" some upcoming new vehicles, an executive said Saturday.

Attracting and retaining employees -- including after the COVID-19 pandemic changed business practices -- remains a priority for dealers, who are working to trim average turnover rates, panelists at AutoTeam America's buy-sell summit in Dallas said Thursday.

The NADA expects a slowdown in economic growth in 2023 with decelerating job gains in the first half of the year. But the auto retail trade group sees new-vehicle sales rising to 14.6 million as inventory rebuilds.

One of the keys for dealers trying to plan ahead this year will be “figuring out how to source affordable vehicles specifically,� says NADA Chief Economist Patrick Manzi, who made a presentation about group's outlook Saturday at the NADA Show in Dallas.

General Motors will include its franchised dealers -- and compensate them in some form -- as part of its strategy around future software sales after a vehicle purchase, executives said.

For the first time in years, the Toyota and Lexus make meeting would have been standing room only on Friday.

Would have been, that is, if local police and fire officials had allowed all the dealers in who wanted to attend, instead of leaving many standing outside in line while the doors closed to a packed house.

Inside the meeting, dealers asked no questions and cheered when executives credited them with Toyota again finishing 2022 as the nation's top-selling brand at retail, said Steve Gates, chairman of the Toyota National Dealer Advisory Council.

Dave Christ, head of the Toyota brand, said dealers were told about the brand's important launches this year, including the redesigned and continually hot-selling Tacoma midsize pickup. He also said that Toyota remains completely committed to the franchise dealer model, including newly named Toyota Motor Corp. CEO Koji Sato.

When Brian MacDonald returned as CDK Global's CEO last July, he promised a "fit and focus" strategy that would fine-tune product offerings to better meet dealer needs.

Dealerships shouldn't count on the Federal Trade Commission's proposed auto retail regulations to be "fixed" or "not take effect," an industry attorney told retailers Thursday.

More work needs to be done to make the number of minority-owned dealerships representative of the U.S. car-buying market, dealer Damon Lester told the audience at the Automotive News Retail Forum: NADA on Thursday.

At the end of 2022, the minority dealer body totaled just more than 1,300. Hispanics made up the largest share of that group, owning just more than 500 dealerships, then Blacks with about 290, Asians with about 280 and the remainder owned by Native Americans.

North American dealers have a well-educated friend and advocate in the newly named CEO of the world's largest automaker, said Jack Hollis, the head of sales for Toyota Motor North America.

Koji Sato, a longtime executive at Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan and a protege of current CEO Akio Toyoda, will succeed his mentor in running the automaker effective April 1. 2023 dealer profits: Only way is down

The U.S. auto industry is expected to suffer a massive decline in total dealership gross profits this year, but it is still expected to finish with the third-best profit level in history as the industry rebalances itself, says Thomas King, president of data and analytics for J.D. Power.

Speaking Thursday at the J.D. Power Auto Summit in Dallas, King said the U.S. retail industry generated a record $55 billion in collective dealership gross and F&I profits in 2022 as low inventories and reduced incentives met strong demand to push transaction prices to record levels.
