Charles Duryea awarded patent for gas-powered car in U.S. in 1895

Charles Duryea is granted a patent on June 11, 1895, for "Improvements in Road-Vehicles," the first gasoline-powered car in the U.S., which he and his younger brother Frank developed. The Duryeas went on to help found Duryea Motor Wagon Co., of Springfield, Mass., in 1896.
