Automakers try to ensure that new products have features that surprise and delight consumers. And behind each of those features is a supplier that has developed the components and technology to make people say, "Wow." The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro's available specialty interior lighting is a case in point.
Supplier: Hella KGaA Hueck & Co.
Vehicle: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro
What it is: Dramatic interior lighting touches, including light strips along the doors, instrument panel, console and cupholders. The vehicle has a color palette of 24 selectable hues. When the car is parked, a "show mode" puts on a light spectacle as lighting elements fade from one color to another in dynamic pattern, with color changes seeming to flow around the cockpit.
A demonstration of the light technology.
The background: GM used Hella lighting to accent the Opel Adam subcompact, and worked with the supplier's team in Plymouth, Mich., to create special lighting for the sixth-generation Camaro. Hella provides a package of components including a control unit, software and the LED light strips themselves.
