Delphi to showcase automated driving technology at CES

Technology and powertrain components supplier Delphi Automotive said it plans to demonstrate new automated driving technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.The supplier, in a statement today, said it will show new software that can monitor a driver's attention and minimize activities when distractions are high."Say you were in New York, the system would be able to detect a high number of pedestrians and determine that a high level of driver concentration is needed and reduce the navigation and infotainment systems," a Delphi spokeswoman said.The workload manager software, while still in its early stages, is able to use a vehicle's sensors and cameras to detect heavy traffic, numerous pedestrians or stop signs and shut down the infotainment system to eliminate distractions."Cross-traffic alerts and lane-keeping technologies are the stepping stones to automated driving," the spokeswoman said. "Many of the technologies we're showing are building off of existing technology."Delphi will be showing other automated driving products such as 360-degree sensing, which uses a vehicle's cameras and radar systems to detect objects and alert the driver."Automated driving is happening now and will continue to expand in capabilities and mainstream use in the very near future," Jeff Owens, Delphi's chief technology officer, said in a statement.Delphi ranks No. 12 on the Automotive News list of the top 100 global suppliers with worldwide sales to automakers of $14.4 billion in 2012.
