GM wanted a retail network, but dealers' lobbying killed the plan
In 1999, General Motors said it planned to buy dealerships and form its own retail operation, GM Retail Holdings. The proposal didn't get far. Dealers successfully lobbied state lawmakers for greater protection against perceived factory competition. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | Sept. 14
Day in Court Act fought factory coercion
The Automobile Dealers' Day in Court Act is the federal government's effort to prevent coercion of dealers by automakers. The 1956 law was a response by Congress to General Motors' sometimes high-handed treatment of its dealers. The act, also called the good-faith law, allows dealers to take franchise disputes to court. GOVERNMENT LOANS FOR AUTOMAKERS
Dealers may split on industry loans
Auto dealers, a potent collective lobbying force in past industry battles here, will decide individually whether to support low-interest government loans to automakers and suppliers. The National Automobile Dealers Association is not taking a position on whether the federal government should fund $25 billion or more in direct industry loans, NADA leaders said today. NADA represents more than 90 percent of the nation's franchised dealers. [REG] 4:22 pm U.S. ET | Sept. 9
Industry tries lean lobbying at conventions
Tough times and tighter ethics rules have led automakers to curtail spending on lavish parties and glamorous shows at national political conventions. But industry leaders won't all be sitting at home when Democrats and Republicans assemble in the next couple of weeks. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | Aug. 18
SERVICE & PARTS
Study: Dealership service shops extend their hours
As new-vehicle sales drop, franchised auto dealerships are keeping their service departments open longer in an effort to boost service and parts revenue. In 2007, the average new-vehicle dealership operated its shop a record 56 hours a week, up from 55 hours in 2006 and 54 hours in 2005, the National Automobile Dealers Association says in a new report. NADA seeks title-wash law
The National Automobile Dealers Association says federal legislation to combat title washing still is needed, even though the insurance industry now is identifying vehicles damaged in crashes or floods. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | July 7
FINAL ASSEMBLY
From cookie sales to auto dough?
If Girl Scouts can sell Thin Mints and Do-Si-Dos now, why not cars, parts and service contracts tomorrow? The National Automobile Dealers Association wants members to contact local Girl Scout troops in an effort to interest young girls in dealership careers. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | May 12
NADA offers training in risky creditAs many as three out of five shoppers who visit auto dealerships have blemished credit, the National Automobile Dealers Association estimates. In response, NADA is offering dealers a training DVD and manual that show how to set up "special finance" departments that work with customers who have risky credit. Industry lobbyists step up emissions fight
Automakers and dealers are teaming up on a fresh lobbying effort aimed at preventing states from getting the authority to enforce their own greenhouse gas emissions rules for vehicles. Top lobbyists for groups that represent dealers, the Detroit 3 and import-brand automakers are making joint presentations to lawmakers and "anybody who will listen," an industry spokesman said. OPINION
Do it the NADA way
It is encouraging that three consumer groups have discovered that title washing is a threat to consumer safety. But filing a lawsuit to force the federal government to create a national database of vehicle titles is the wrong approach. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | Feb. 25
