Ford signals expansion of Chariot shuttle service to Detroit

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. appears to be planning an expansion of its Chariot shuttle service into its home state of Michigan.The San Francisco-based company's website lists job openings for full-time and part-time drivers in Detroit. The company declined to discuss the postings, and it's unclear when service in Detroit would begin."We continue to explore a number of markets as part of Chariot's ongoing expansion plans, but don't have any news to share at this time," Chariot said in a statement. A Ford spokesman referred questions to Chariot.The app-based service, which Ford bought in 2016, uses real-time traffic data to dispatch nine-passenger Transit wagons to high-density areas to ease congestion and improve commutes.Ford said in January that Chariot would undergo a "major shift in focus" to provide employee transportation services for businesses through "enterprise routes." The Detroit job post said drivers would participate in both enterprise and commuter services, although it's unclear what businesses the company will partner with.Applicants need a valid Michigan driver's license, be willing to obtain a Michigan chauffeur permit, have no more than two moving violations and have had a valid license for at least three years, according to the website posting. Drivers cannot have any past drunken driving convictions or suspensions. Drivers receive health, dental and vision benefits as well as CDL training and performance-based promotions."The ideal Charioteer enjoys working with people, is professional, and has excellent interpersonal skills," the post said.Chariot, launched in San Francisco in 2014, has since expanded to a number of cities around the globe, including New York, Seattle, Austin, Columbus and London.Last month, the company's CEO and co-founder, Ali Vahabzadeh, stepped down to pursue other opportunities, although he'll continue to provide consulting services to the company and will remain on Chariot's board of directors.Dan Grossman, who leads microtransit for Ford Smart Mobility, is filling in as interim CEO.
