Auto recalls hit record 53.2 million in 2016

U.S. regulators say recalls will eventually affect about 42 million U.S. vehicles with nearly 70 million Takata airbag inflators, making it the largest U.S. auto safety campaign ever.

WASHINGTON -- Automakers recalled a record 53.2 million vehicles last year in the United States after a massive expansion of the callbacks to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators, the U.S. Transportation Department said on Friday.
