Mobileye, which supplies advanced driver assistance systems sensors, has entered into a strategic partnership with intelligent mapping company Here.

In a press release published Thursday, Mobileye said it would provide its Roadbook technology -- real-time road data collected by Mobileye sensors -- as an additional layer to Here’s mapping data and use Here’s Open Location platform, which analyzes and provides context to location data, to augment information gathered through its sensors.

The integration of both companies’ data is intended to be used by autonomous vehicles, which rely on real-time location information to make decisions.

“We are building a state-of-the-art global HD map that is becoming the standard for autonomous driving,” Here CEO Edzard Overbeek said in a statement.

Mobileye has also entered into agreements with BMW Group and Delphi Automotive to develop fully autonomous driving systems. Its partnership with Tesla Motors Inc. dissolved in July over safety concerns with Tesla’s semiautonomous Autopilot software.

Here has collaborated with technology companies such as Microsoft and Samsung and provides mapping data for automakers, including Hyundai Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.

The partnership between Mobileye and Here -- a company backed by BMW, Audi and Daimler, and Chinese companies Tencent and NavInfo -- strengthens both companies’ positions in an autonomous future, and affirms the role of map makers as partners rather than competitors with autonomous driving system suppliers, according to analysts.

“The type of scale created by joining Here [75 percent market share of embedded navigation systems] and Mobileye [65 percent share of ADAS] is unlikely to be matched by competing approaches,” wrote David Leiker, an analyst at Baird, in a note to investors.
