NASHVILLE -- Nissan is not revealing what model it is. But the low-roof, wide stance silhouette of the car in its New York auto show teaser can be little other than its GT-R supercar.

Nissan appears to be setting the stage to announce a redesign for the sports car, which first appeared in U.S. showrooms in 2008. The GT-R’s distinctive four-ring tail lights are unmistakable in the teaser shot released today.

The 545-hp GT-R, with its 3.8-liter DOHC 24-valve V6, has been enhanced almost annually since it appeared, with regular modifications to its technology, performance, handling and power. To feature the nameplate at the New York show suggests Nissan now has a major redesign in the works.

The GT-R is one of Nissan’s primary brand buzz-generators, despite selling only 1,000 to 1,500 a year in the U.S. market. Production of the car is limited by its practice of using a small group of Japanese craftsmen to hand-build each engine.

The base model GT-R retails for $103,365, including destination charges.
