Federal-Mogul to launch national tech training program

Federal-Mogul Corp., the powertrain and aftermarket parts supplier controlled by billionaire investor Carl Icahn, is launching a national automotive technician training program.Garage Gurus will debut this month with regional training centers in four cities, online sessions and other support for technicians, service writers and shop owners, the supplier said. The program also is open to dealership techs and service writers, a spokesman said.The first four training centers are scheduled to open on April 14 in suburban Chicago, April 16 in suburban Los Angeles, April 21 in New York and in late April in St. Louis.By year end, as many as 15 training centers with a combined reach of more than 67,000 vehicle repair locations are expected to be operating, the company said. The centers will be staffed by instructors certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.Each training center will include multiple vehicle repair/training bays with the latest diagnostic tools, the company said. Web-connected Gurus-On-The-Go product technology vans will operate out of the training centers and will be available to visit repair shops and technicians in each region.Gurus-On-The-Go training, field clinics and online training will be free initially, the company said, though a minimal charge might apply in the future.
