For some, driving is more stressful than skydiving

According to research funded by Audi, driving in chaotic urban traffic can be nearly as stressful for some people as skydiving.The study, conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, used Audi Q5s to test driver frustration, Audi said in a statement.Audi is using the research to develop technology to reduce drivers' stress.To compile the Road Frustration Index, researchers used facial and body tracking, skin conductance sensors and environmental recordings to measure drivers' stress and frustration.The findings were compared with stress levels recorded in the same subjects who performed other activities, including adventure sports, taking a test or eating breakfast."We found that certain driving situations can be one of the most stressful activities in our lives," Kael Greco, the project leader, said in a statement.The preliminary trials were over 12 months across 30 U.S. metropolitan areas on a variety of roadway types. "By working with MIT to identify stress points for drivers, Audi is able to anticipate the needs for future mobility," Filip Brabec, director of product management for Audi of America, said in a statement.
